In our group discussion today, we mainly focused on looking up the many allusions in the text. Holden references stories and authors many times throughout the book, because he has a passion for literature and English, but we were unfamiliar with most of the books and authors he mentioned. We discovered that many of the books that he mentions share themes with Catcher In The Rye. For example, Holden mentions Return of the Native by Thomas Hardy on pages 25 and 144. This book has to do with a man who felt that he has led a "shallow" life, referencing Holden's hatred of "phonies." Also, the allusion to David Copperfield on page 3 references a novel by Charles Dickens, which is considered a Bildungsroman. Overall, today we just tried to research the numerous allusions in the text and connect them to the larger themes of the book.

Group 1's discussion of the day was on the topic of Holden's desire of death because of his depression and how it was interesting for him to want death but always repeat God, Christ, and Jesus .During the discussion pages 23, 25, and 40 were referred back to constantly to support our theory of him showing signs of wanting to die. "that killed me", "that story just about killed me", "i damn near dropped dead."
Also in our discussion the contrast of Holden wanting to die and the constant reference to God was interesting to us. We talked about how one of Gods biggest sins is to kill or commit suicide.

Today in class group 3 focused on Hollywood. On page 4, Holden talks about his extreme dislike of movies and Hollywood. Then, throughout the book, Holden complains that his brother resorted to Hollywood. When Sunny comes to his hotel room, however, she is from Hollywood. Previously in the book, Holden said his brother was prostituting in Hollywood. Sunny just proved he was right about his thoughts of the city. Since she lies to him about how he has to pay, he thinks all people are fake like in the movies. We also discussed why Holden disliked movies so much, and came to the conclusion that he thought people in them are fake and he hates "phonies".
